Sarah Jane Cockrell Obituary

Sarah Jane Cockrell, age 98, of Sunbury, Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024. Sarah (Janie) was born April 17, 1925 to Clay and Delma (Moss) Rammelsberg.

Janie graduated from Westerville High School and the Columbus Business School. She married Dean Junior Cockrell on August 6, 1950. They purchased a farm north of Sunbury where they raised their four children, Carolyn (Paul) Wallace, Linda (Lynn) Saunders, Teresa (Bill) Gorsuch and Greg (Michele) Cockrell. She had eight grandchildren: Holly Hoffer, Justin Sutherland, Dean Gorsuch, Michael Gorsuch, Christopher Wallace, Jonathan Wallace, Amanda Morgan Opoka and Chase Cockrell. She was a great grandma to eleven. Her grandchildren and greats all loved and adored her. Each grandchild laid claim to being her favorite. Janie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dean Cockrell; grandson, Chase Cockrell; sisters Beulah Fritsche and Mary Alice Lukens.

Janie worked side by side with Dean on the farm for 56 years milking cows and working in the fields. She also handled all the financial accounting for the farm. Janie loved her gardens, both vegetable and floral. She continued to work in her flower gardens until she was 98. She was also a talented seamstress. Janie was an active member of the Condit Presbyterian Church for 60 years and held many positions with the church including serving as an Elder. She was active in the Condit Friendly Club and Condit Bible Study. Known for her ability to cook and bake, her pies sold for high bids at church functions. Janie was a founding member of the Sunbury CCL (Crib to College League). She was a member of several card clubs from her early 50’s up until she went into the nursing home in September, playing with friends and family at every opportunity. She enjoyed euchre, hand and foot, train and Uno and was very competitive. Janie spent many hours in the nursing home playing Uno with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even in her last week she was playing Euchre with her brother and his family. Keeping her mind sharp was very important. She was an avid reader until she passed. She especially loved reading good mysteries, biographies and the Bible. Janie loved to do sudoku, word searches and watched the news daily to stay informed. Friends were an integral part of her life. She considered her lifetime of friendships a huge blessing and was very grateful for those who included her in their lives. She led a very active and fulfilling life. The family would like to say a special thanks to Country View of Sunbury and Bella Vista Hospice for their wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Condit Presbyterian Church or Bella
