Eugene Carl Berndt Sr. Obituary

ST. NAZIANZ - Eugene Carl Berndt Sr., 77, passed away peacefully on January 16th, 2024 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He was surrounded by the love of his children and extended family prior to his passing.  Gene was born in Columbus, WI on June 4, 1946 to the late Arnold and Charlotte “Lottie” (nee Hensler) Berndt.  Gene served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1969.  On April 15, 1969 he was united in marriage with Elsie Loretta Koch.

Gene was a hard working man who enjoyed various trades, especially construction and the trucking industry.  He always had a love for farming and working with livestock.  He was always up for a good game of Cribbage or Yahtzee, reading books, watching old movie classics and challenging his wife by completing daily crossword puzzles.  Gene cheered on local Wisconsin sports teams, especially the Green Bay Packers.  He had a deep affection for the outdoors where he enjoyed fishing and hunting alone or especially with family.

Gene is survived by his sons: Eugene (Brenda Newby) Berndt Jr., Erich (Billie Jo) Berndt; daughters: Regina (Ronald Mand) Degeneffe, Pam Whitehouse; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers: Harvey, Otto “Red”, William “Bill” and Kenny; many extended family members, friends and his adored German Shorthaired Pointer, Schatzi (translated to English as sweetheart).

He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of almost 50-years Elsie and his siblings: Robert, Arnie, Charlie, Eric and Marilyn.

Gene’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the VA Hospitals of Green Bay and Milwaukee and the staff at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center for their compassion and care.

Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
