Bertie Joyce Gilligan Obituary

Bertie Joyce Gilligan, 82, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024 at Falcons Landing in Sterling, Virginia. Joyce, as she was known to most, was born on May 25, 1941, in Anniston, Alabama to Frank Edward and Bertie Lee (nee Bowman) Bentley of Anniston, AL.

Joyce was a “military brat” growing up across the United States and France, graduating from Davis High School in Utah. Joyce attended Jefferson Community College and Weber State College. In late 1964, she met who would turn out to be the love of her life at Hill Air Force Base, Francis “Bud” Gilligan, they married in March 1966. Bud was a career Air Force pilot, and Joyce was a true military spouse traveling the world, entertaining, planning events, and volunteering wherever they landed. She loved to sing, joining choral groups where she could. Her love of entertaining the world prepared her well for a career as a meeting and convention planner, and subsequently Assistant Director, at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for 18 years. She was a past member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, VA. After retiring, Joyce and Bud moved to Southern Utah to be closer to their granddaughter and enjoy the sunshine and year-round golf, returning to Northern Virginia in 2020.

Joyce enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling, and music. She never went anywhere without a book or her Kindle (loaded with books) stashed in her purse. Music was always playing in the background – except during a football or soccer game of course. She was a self-taught foodie, enjoying new meals from around the world and then recreating them at home to share with all. She delighted in her granddaughter and great-nieces and great-nephews. Joyce always put her family and their needs first.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bud; daughter, Marie O’Quinn (Brian), granddaughter Chloe; siblings Frank E. Bentley, Jr., Charles “Bill” Bentley, Anita Carr (Tommy); nieces and nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by son John, and parents Frank and Bertie Bentley. All of whom she loved deeply.

Please join us in celebrating her life Monday, February 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 2609 N Glebe Rd, Arlington, VA 22207. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.
