Eureka- Betty Jean Schertz, 91, of Eureka, IL, passed away at 8:25 a.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka. She was born November 10, 1924 in Princeton, IL a daughter of Alvin and Elsie Sears Smucker. She married Wayne W. Schertz on July 14, 1945 at her parents home in rural Buda, IL. He passed away on May 16, 2003. Surviving children are one son, Randall W. (Tereza) Schertz of Eureka; three daughters, Sharon K. Schertz of Eureka; Marcia (Rich) Gerig of Phoenix, AZ; Roxanne Schertz of Goshen, IN; six grandchildren, Juliana (Kevin) Kupferschmid, David (Nicole) Schertz, Ashley (Bryan) Beatty, Jill Gerig, Ben (Jill Schmidt) Gerig, Brett Hart; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Smucker of Tiskilwa, IL; and Clayton Smucker of Washington, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Cletus Smucker and one infant sister. Betty graduated from Buda High School in 1942. She attended ISNU (now ISU) from 1943-1944 where she was the captain of the women's basketball team. Betty worked as a stenographer at RG LeTourneau, Inc. from 1942-1943. From 1944-1946 she worked at State Farm as a stenographer and later was a secretary at the Woodford County Farm Bureau. Betty worked from 1960-1977 in the Eureka College Alumni office as a secretary. Betty and Wayne enjoyed traveling to Canada, Brazil, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Haiti, and Germany. In retirement they spent winters in Bradenton, FL where they had many great times golfing and getting together with friends. Betty was an accomplished homemaker excelling in sewing, crocheting, cooking, and gardening. She had a keen eye for design in home-decorating and clothing. She used these skills as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Throughout the years her center was always her family, and her considerable energy and work was directed for their benefit. Betty was an active member of the Roanoke Mennonite Church, where memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016. Pastor Frank Kandel will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at the Roanoke Mennonite Fellowship Hall. Private burial will be held in Roanoke Mennonite Cemetery. Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka is handling arrangements for the family. Memorials may be made to the Roanoke Mennonite Church, the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka, or a charity of the donor's choice.
