Hilda Cora Gum Wheeler

Hilda Cora Gum Wheeler, age 93 years, a resident of Elkins, WV, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2017 at Colonial Place at Elkins, WV with her family at her side and under the care of Mountain Hospice. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to Alzheimer's disease. She was born Monday, May 7, 1923 at Elkins, WV, a daughter of the late Ralph Leon and Xanna Elizabeth Curtis Gum. On December 9, 1942 she was married to James Ralph Thomas Wheeler, who survives. They had celebrated seventy-four years of marriage. Also surviving is her only daughter, Cheryl Ann Wheeler (Thomas) of Elkins. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are three brothers, Filcer, Harry, and Paul Gum; and two sisters, Wanda Cunningham, and Wilda Joseph. She was a graduate of Elkins High School. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was a wonderfully kind and compassionate person who unselfishly gave of herself to others. The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 5 to 8 PM. A Private Graveside Service will be held at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins WV. Pastor Bryan Headley will officiate and interment will follow.
