Helen J. Frejd-Brehm passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024, at the age of 88, in Shorewood, IL. Born on February 16, 1936, in Hebron, IL, to the late Clarence and Grace (Kooistra) DeYoung, Helen's life was marked by her generous spirit and unwavering dedication to her faith, her family, and her friends.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Helen's legacy is carried on by her loving sons, Russell (Sylvia) and William (Barbara) Frejd; her adoring grandchildren, Ashley (David) Henderson, Robert (Sharon) Frejd, Daniel Frejd, and Derek (Taylor) Frejd; and her seven great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Helen's brothers, John, James (Patricia), and David (Mary Ann) DeYoung, will remember her for the strength and care she consistently demonstrated. Her memory will also be shared by her four stepchildren, along with numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, all of whom she embraced with open arms. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, Robert Frejd and Charles Brehm; her dear son, Donald Frejd; and her brother, Richard DeYoung.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and Helen's passion for spreading the word of God was evident in the numerous Bible studies, friendships, and church activities. Her ability to enrich the lives of others, share her deep understanding of scripture, and generously offer her gift of playing the piano, left a lasting impact on the many lives she had the opportunity to connect with.
Helen's love and devotion for her family and friends was inspiring. Her kindness also extended to her furry companion, Bobbi, who was a faithful friend and a source of great comfort to her.
An avid gardener, Helen found great joy and satisfaction in tending to her flowers and plants.
Helen had a long career as a registered nurse. Her compassion and skill as a nurse was evident in the way she cared for every patient who crossed her path. Colleagues and friends from her work will remember Helen’s supportive and wise demeanor.
As we remember Helen, we celebrate a life that was filled with joy, grace and an abundance of love. Helen's life story is not just one of loss, but one of hope and profound gratitude for the time we shared with her. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and comfort us.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen’s name to Lightway’s Hospice in Joliet.
