Gloria Jean Brown Obituary

Gloria Jean Brown, Master Teacher and resident of Annapolis, MD, died surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, daughter of the late Harold C. Brown and Gazella Sembly. Member of Asbury United Methodist Church since childhood; Educated and graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School in 1960; from, the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore in 1964 with BS degree; from Morgan State University in 1978 with M.S degree. She became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in 1962. Her teaching career began in 1965 at Glen Burnie High School—first African American Teacher. Subsequently, she transferred to Annapolis High School in 1969, and became the first African American to hold the position as Department Chairperson in Business Education under the Principalship of Richard G. Ensor in 1981 until retirement in 2004. She received multiple National recognition in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for commitment to education; commendations as Advisor for FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERCIA for more than twenty-five years; and Educator of the Year Award by the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce in 1997. She participated in Curriculum writing, was inducted into the Annapolis High School Wall of Fame, as a charter member, and is published in the AMERCIA VOICES COMING TOGETHER. Writing poetry dedicated to family, friends, and colleagues was one of her favorite pastimes. Her professional membership included NEA, NBEA, MSTA, TAAAC and MBEA. Upon her retirement, she became a member of AARSPA, AARP, and a lifetime member of UMES, MSU, and NAACP. She taught computer technology courses at her church. Survivors include her husband whom she married in 1988, LCDR Larence H. Brown, USN Ret; One son, Mr. Emmanuel T. Green, Jr.; One granddaughter, Mrs. Ashley N. Ducre; Four great-grandchildren, Amari Ducre, Jamarr Ducre Jr, Lohgan Ducre and Zoe Ducre. Four step children, Larence, Jr of Broken Arrow, OK; Kathy Edmonds of Bowie, MD; Kent Brown of MD and Kirby Brown of TX. Her siblings are Yvonne Brown, Jennifer Johnson, Gazella Lynn Coates, Brian Johnson of Columbia, MD; Harold C. Brown, Jr. of Grand Prairie, TX; Joseph T. Brown of Stafford, VA, Ernestine Cotman of Charles City, VA, George ‘Chicky’ Johnson of Bowie, MD, and Karen Johnson of Annapolis, MD. Gloria Jean Brown will be laid to rest on June 1, 2017. Memorial and graveside services are private. Arrangements are by Lasting Tributes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wiley H. Bates Alumni Association.
