Gerald Lionel Cooley Obituary

Jerry passed away peacefully on January 14th, 2017. He was born on August 25th, 1937 in Johnson City, New York. He is survived by his sister Jessica Lamar of Newbury Park, California and his four children and ten grandchildren. Jerry was married on June 6, 1959 to Marie Baudino and the two of them were soul mates in life and love for fifty-three years until Marie’s passing in 2012. Jerry was a devoted father of four children (Mike, Linda Chapman, Kevin and Carla Armstrong) and grandfather of ten cherished grandchildren (Brendan, Sean, Dillon and Kevin Cooley; Hannah and Noah Chapman; Kathleen and Emma Cooley; Jack and Shannon Armstrong). He also held in high esteem his daughters-in-law Karen and Mary, and his sons-in-law Robert and Andy. Jerry was a long time resident of Ulmstead in Arnold, having moved there with his family in 1971. Having earned his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1961, Jerry dedicated his professional life to developing radar and guidance systems such as those used on the Longbow and Harpoon missiles. Many of the systems Jerry worked on remain in use by our armed forces today. Jerry was very talented with his hands and enjoyed home improvement projects and woodworking; including a hand-made guitar for Marie and a small boat for Michael. Starting with his first car, a 1940 Ford, he was an adept mechanic; fully restoring a Porsche and keeping Linda’s MG Midget in running condition. Jerry also enjoyed a good game of billiards, especially straight pool. He was a founding member of the Ulmstead Cue Club and played weekly with its members for over 40 years. His sons Kevin and Michael are now members. Jerry loved sailing on the Magothy River and Chesapeake Bay and passed on this love on to his children, especially his son Kevin. Two of Jerry’s grandchildren currently compete at the collegiate level on the St. Mary’s College sailing team. Jerry had a zest for life and a well-developed sense of humor. A fan of Texas and electric blues, both he and Marie particularly enjoyed listening to the music of Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball and Emmy Lou Harris. He and Marie enjoyed soaking in this music on Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beaches cruises. A gathering to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held from 2 to 6 PM on March 26th at the home of Linda Chapman located at 750 Pine Trail in the Bayberry community located in Arnold, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (http://www.alz.org).
