Palmer Sigmond Torgerson Obituary

Palmer Sigmond Torgerson (Retired USAF) (Age 80) Palmer went to be with our Heavenly Father September 21, 2015 at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, WA. He was born May 8, 1935 in Crosby, ND to Anton and Inga Torgerson. Palmer was the youngest of 4 sons. He went to live with his aunt and uncle, Mari and Hans Sateren after his mother passed away. His father died when he was a senior in high school. He is preceded in death by all of his brothers, Toralf, Olaf, and Arne, and 2 infant sisters, Bertha and Beatrice. He attended Alamo High School and enlisted in the US Air Force after graduating in 1953. He married Shirley Hillestad on March 20, 1954. They were married 61 years and she was the biggest blessing in his life. Palmer's family meant everything to him, and he meant everything to his family. After serving 20 years in the US Air Force as a Crew Chief/Jet Mechanic on B47, B52 and KC135 aircrafts, he retired on February 28, 1974. His years of service took him to many countries including England, The Azores, Japan, The Philippines, Guam, Okinawa and Thailand. During the course of his career he lived in North Dakota, Texas, Idaho, South Dakota, Hawaii, California, Oklahoma, and Washington. After retiring Palmer and Shirley purchased a home in Arizona where they lived during the winter months. Palmer had a great love for animals, especially dogs. Children gravitated toward him, probably because he was just a kid-at-heart himself! He was witty, had a great sense of humor, and was quite the jokester. He could fix anything. His girls complained that they never got anything new because he could fix anything that broke! Being such a good mechanic, his collection of tools was unbelievable. Everyone always commented on how organized and immaculate he was. Palmer had many lifelong friends who were very dear to him. He was a trusted and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife Shirley, Spokane, WA; three daughters and three son-in-laws: Paulette & Virgil Bleken, Spokane; Katura & David McKinney, Santa Clara, CA; and Shari & Patrick Risken, Helena, MT. Also survived by six grandchildren: Travis Bleken (and wife Megan), Jared Bleken (and wife Courtni), Evan Stewart, Anna McKinney, Lisa McKinney and Jack Risken; five great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Naomi, Noah, Jace and Hudson. Viewing will be from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Thursday, September 24th, at Heritage Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, September 25th, at the same location. Burial will be at 2:15 pm at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Medical Lake.
