Sanford "Sandy" Bowerman

Sanford “Sandy” Bowerman, 65, of Touchet/Walla Walla, Washington a very unique and passionate individual, died of sudden cardiac arrest, on December 23, 2017, on Frog Hollow Road, near his home. Sandy was born on April 12, 1952, to Chester and Mary Ellen (Clendaniel) Bowerman, of Walla Walla, Washington. He was the second of three children. Sandy attended Green Park Elementary, Pioneer Jr High, and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1970. He was a fast runner and early on in school he was passionate about track and field, until he suffered a severely broken ankle. Shortly thereafter Sandy began working for Fleenor’s grocery on Isaacs Street where he worked in the bakery earning enough money for his next passion, his brand new Plymouth Road Runner. His pride and joy had ram air, a pinned hood, a 5 speed floor shift, and he was often seen cruising the “gut” where he definitely had the need for speed and loved socializing with everyone. After graduation, he married Vickie Taylor and had two sons: Chad and Scott from this union. They were later divorced. Sandy worked for Coca Cola, during his early career and delivered beverages throughout the Walla Walla valley. Although he never met his soul mate he never quit trying. He was featured in the Union Bulletin delivering roses on horseback to a sweetheart and was referred to as the Valentine Cowboy. After attending his mother’s funeral at the Walla Walla cemetery on that same horse, he discovered a pair of saddle-bags and bible that belonged to his great grandfather, Sam Maxon. Sam was a circuit preacher who traveled by horseback. It was his desire to return these items to their original state, and eventually display them at the Cowboy Church. Sandy bought his dream home on State Line Road in Touchet, and resided there for many years with his beloved horse “Chubby”, “Cassie”, his mule, and his numerous German Shepherds. Later on Sandy began driving long haul truck, working for Guglielmelli Trucking, Boise Cascade, Walgreens, and had recently retired from Basin Disposal where he hauled from a transfer site in Pasco to Boardman, Oregon. Sandy loved to hunt the mountains of Oregon and Washington, and constantly talked about the watershed. Sandy made numerous friends and was known by many for his broad smile, his hearty laugh, his cowboy hat, his boots and slicker. Sandy is survived by his two sons, Chad Bowerman from Touchet, Washington and Scott Bowerman from Tacoma, Washington; his sister Elaine (Tony) Baldwin of Fallon, Nevada, and brother Lynn (Tammy) Bowerman of Salmon, Idaho; numerous cousins. Sandy was preceded in death by his grand parents, Frank Sr & Adna Clendaniel, grandparents Byron & Lovina Bowerman, his parents, Chester and Mary Ellen Bowerman, an uncle, Frank Clendaniel, Uncle Glen Gregory & Aunt Edna, Uncle Joe French & Aunt Velma, Uncle Ronald Bowerman & Aunt Verda, Uncle Revelle Bowerman & Aunt Nancy, and Cousin, David Clendaniel. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Fellowship Hall, in the Amazing Grace Church of the Nazarene, 717 E. Alder Street, Walla Walla on July 13th, at 3:00 PM. A luncheon will follow. The family suggests memorials be made to the building fund of the Walla Walla Valley Cowboy Church in Sandy’s name and sent to:Pastor Ron Alexander, 13 W. Imperial Street, Walla Walla, Washington 99362.
