Dr. Alan M. Adelman Obituary

Dr. Alan M. Adelman of Harrisburg, PA, passed away on December 2, 2023 surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to Robert and Elaine (Katz) Adelman. A graduate of Northeast High School, he then went on to receive a degree in chemistry from Albright College in 1971. In both high school and college he was a standout athlete in track and cross country. He attended Temple Medical School, graduating in 1975. This marked the start of a long career in medicine where he excelled as a clinician caring for patients, a researcher and educator. It was also where he met his wife Carol, and together they embarked on a lifelong adventure, moving to California for his residency, the Hopi Reservation in remote northern Arizona to serve in the Indian Health Service, Iowa, Connecticut, Maryland and finally Central Pennsylvania in 1992, where Alan became the vice-chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He was a faculty member for 30 years there until his retirement.

He was passionate about providing exceptional care to his patients, advancing the practice of medicine through research and scholarship, and training future generations of physicians. He worked tirelessly towards these goals, even while battling a myriad of his own health challenges beginning with a cancer diagnosis in 1999 and continuing in the years that followed. Outside of work he was an avid cyclist, traveler and lifelong learner.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years Carol, his three children, Joshua Adelman (Amy Sturtz), Rachel Adelman, and Layla Adelman (Emmanuelle Wambach) and two grandchildren, Ezra and Cora Adelman. He is also survived by his sister Meryl Soifer and her husband Michael. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
