Carol Janet Carlson Obituary

Carol “Jan” Janet Carlson, 94, beloved and faithful wife of Reverend Peder Carlson, received the gift of eternal life in her home on December 25, 2023, because she knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was born in Chesterton, Indiana on September 18, 1929, the daughter of Walter and Grace (Miller) Bates. After her father returned from serving in World War II, at Camp Grant, outside of Rockford, the family moved to Chesterton, Indiana. Jan graduated from Chesterton High School. She moved to Chicago and worked as a secretary in the Insurance Exchange building; the Presbyterian Distribution Center; and then was selected as a model showing furniture at the Board of Trade Building. She declared her faith in Jesus Christ at Buena Memorial Presbyterian Church where she met Peder Carlson, who was a student at McCormick Seminary, in preparation for the ministry. They were married on June 5, 1954, and moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Peder completed his seminary training at the University of Dubuque and Jan was hired as the Director of Children’s Activities at the YWCA. Together they served three congregations: in Schapville, IL for seven years; Round Lake, IL for seven years; and finally in Loves Park, IL where they served 30 years at Bethany Presbyterian Church of Loves Park, which awarded him the title of Pastor Emeritus when he retired in 1999. Jan was an advisor and a strong supporter of Peder’s ministry. The congregation soon learned not to make an unfair criticism of Peder’s ministry in front of Jan. They made home and hospital calls together and greeted the congregation at the end of the Sunday service. Jan served as a trustee, deacon, and elder. She became a member of the Rockford Ministers’ Wives; the Faith Builders’ Class of Third Presbyterian Church; and served four years as President of the Rockford branch of the Church Women United of America. For about 20 years she organized and taught five weekly neighborhood Bible classes. In the year 2020 she joined the First Presbyterian Church of Belvidere where her husband was given the honor of being called their Senior Pastor. Jan was a cancer survivor and contracted Parkinson’s disease. She spent her final days under the care of Mercy Health Hospice at the P.A. Peterson Nursing Home.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years; five sons Peter, Paul, Tommy, Brian, and Gregory; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death is her parents; and 2 sisters Joyce and Elizabeth.

A Memorial Visitation will be held at 10:30 am with service to follow at 11 am, Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Belvidere, 221 N. Main St., Belvidere, IL 61008, led by their pastor, Dr. Bob Kopp, author of numerous books; Dr. Murray Hanson, founder and director of Rockford’s radio station 99.3 FM; and Reverend Steve Bowie, lead pastor of Third Presbyterian Church in Rockford. The service will be televised on YouTube FPC Belvidere. The Belvidere deacons will prepare a light lunch reception following the service. All are welcome. The family appreciates the services of Mercy Health Hospice and Stateline Cremations. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Jan’s name.
