Eileen Duffell Lugano Obituary

Eileen Duffell Lugano, 81, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2023. She is predeceased by her husband of 23 years, John A. Lugano and her son Sean. She is survived by four of her children, John (Lauren), Stephanie McCuin (Bob), Kristen Brennan (Artie), Michael (Kristin), her 10 cherished grandchildren, Emma, Katie, Ryan, Devon, Sean, Brooke, Lindsay, Taylor, Noelle, and Collette, Her siblings Fr. John Duffell, the late Carolanne, Rita, Richard, Stephen, Anne, Denise and Suzette.


Eileen was born on June 29, 1942 in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, NY. The oldest of the late Anne (Dowling) and the late John Duffell’s nine children. Eileen was a lifelong resident of New York City and never afraid to debate how great that was. She attended P.S.59, Our Saviors, Mount St. Ursla High School and 1964 graduate of Good Council College, Teaching degree in hand she set out to make a difference. First, a few adventures as a waitress, Mrs. King Corn Stamps and a stewardess in Honalulu, Hawaii.


In 1968 Eileen and John Lugano marry and start a family, placing roots in New York City’s Stuyvesant Town. The anchors in her life were always strong faith, education and family. A proud ESL and GED Teacher for the NYC Deparnment of Education for 47 years. In her later years, she continued her own education by securing a masters degree from Fordham University. With a true passion for others, Eileen was closely involved with The Epiphany School, The Notre Dame School of Manhattan, Xavier High School, The 9/11 Tribute Museum and her Stuyvesant Town Community. She was Mothers’ Club President, a costume designer, an actress, a choir member, and a tour guide. When friends and family needed her, she was there with a smile. Her apartment parties were famous. Chinese New Year, Christmas Caroling and bobbing for apples on Halloween were looked forward to by all.


A life well lived, through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, she will be missed.


To honor her life, family and friends will gather on Sunday, December 17th from 2pm to 8pm at Redden's Funeral Home, 325 W. 14th St., New York, New York 10014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 18th at 10am at The Church of St. Francis Xavier, 30 West 16th Street. New York, New York, 10011 followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Valhalla, New York.
