Lynette Smith Obituary

Lynette C. Johnson-Smith, mother of Valerie Smith, the late Trechia Smith, Monica Smith, Hassana Smith, Malikatun Smith and Al-Najm Smith; sister of the late Amos Jr., Erlene Rashid, the late Marva Collins, Aaron Johnson, Gary Johnson, Arnold Johnson and Arthur Johnson; grandmother to 23 grandchildren; and great-grandmother to one great-grandson. Also, she leaves to cherish, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her immediate family, Lynette leaves two of her dearest friends Selena Gordan and Veora Tyson. Lynette was born in Newark, New Jersey on February 22, 1953 to the late Amos and Doris Johnson. Lynette was educated at Essex County College where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medicine. Her career as a nurse spanned over 28 years in various hospitals in New Jersey, Maryland and North Carolina. She dedicated her life’s work to caring for infants with birth defects. She worked long and hard hours, always giving 100% of her time to make their lives better. When others gave up hope, she continued to shower those tiny treasures with the love from her heart. In 1990, she was baptized and accepted Jesus, our Lord and Savior, into her life. Additionally, she volunteered her time to various churches, as she loved to do God’s work. She lived the remaining years of her life with her daughters and grandchildren. Those who knew Lynette knew she would do anything for you no matter where you were. She would get on I-95 and travel for hours as if it were nothing. She made us laugh. She made us cry. And we loved her for it. When I am gone, release me let me go— I have so many things to see and do. You must not tie yourself to me with tears. Be happy that we had so many years. I gave you my love. You can only guess How much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love you have shown. But, now it is time I travel on alone. So grieve for me if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It is only for a while that we must part. So, bless the memories within your heart. I will not be so far away, for life goes on. So, if you need me, call and I will come. Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near. And, if you listen within your heart, you will hear. All my love around you, soft and clear. And, then when you must come this way alone, I will greet you with a smile and “Welcome Home".
