Betty Ray Phillips was born to Ray Clay Phillips and Mildred Alice Elwell on January 24, 1937, in Fittstown, Oklahoma. She peacefully transitioned from this life to her heavenly eternal home on November 11th, 2023, after a long battle of declining health. Betty graduated from Bixby High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Honor Roll.
Betty was a faithful wife and mother of 69 years. For many years, she was a “home engineer” and was a wonderful cook and housekeeper. She took pride in growing her own fruit and vegetables, canning and freezing them, while teaching her children how to shuck corn and snap green beans. She was the help mate in raising her four children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Of course, all of this was done under the mentoring care of Nettie Gray and Beulah Gray!
When her children were a little older, Betty worked for the Bixby Telephone Company. She began her career as a switchboard operator, where she would plug individual calls into a switchboard, which would allow one person to connect a call to another. She was promoted to Customer Service Specialist, where she would work directly with customers to pay their bills while also lending an ear to listen. Before retiring, Betty was the Commercial Office Manager and on the board of directors. She was an employee of the Bixby phone company for 33 years!
After retiring in 2000, Betty (along with her husband John) began caring for shut-ins from their church as well as relatives. Betty was a faithful member of the Bixby Church of Christ for 72 years, since age 14, when she moved to Bixby to live with her Uncle Frank and Aunt Nettie Gray.
Betty will be greatly missed by her husband, John, of 69 years, who took care of her at home until her final breath on earth. She is also survived by her son Dewight Farrar and wife Susie of Kiefer, daughter Debria and husband Clay of Bixby, and daughter LaNora Bean and husband Mike of Keifer, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and by her son Keith of Bixby. Although Betty will continue to be deeply missed, her family and friends are rejoicing that she is now walking the streets of gold!
