JESSE JONES REID, SR. Obituary

Jesse Jones Reid, Sr. better known as “Nick” was born June24, 1933 to the late Allnutt M. Reid and Essie Jones Reid in Plum Point Maryland. He departed this life on Saturday February 24, 2018 at the NMS Health Care Center, in Annapolis Maryland. He was united in matrimony to the late Ruth Nutter Reid in August 1958 and from this union a son Jesse Reid Jr. was born. Jesse attended the public schools of Calvert County graduating in 1950. He furthered his education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He served in the United States Army from 1955-57 and became a Korean War veteran. Upon his return to the county he did additional study at Morgan State University. He taught science at Brooks High School from 1957 -1960. Jesse became a school bus contractor in 1961 for the Calvert County Public Schools. Jesse’s professional and civic affiliations, honors and awards and community service include the following: President of the Calvert County School Bus Contractors Association, Member of the State By-Laws Committee of the MD School Bus Contractors Association for two years, President of the Maryland School Bus Contractors Association for two years, inducted in the international School Bus Contractors Association’s Hall of Fame and recognized as the Republican Club’s Man of the Year. Jesse has been a member of the Huntingtown Fire and Rescue Department since 1974 and has served in the following capacities: firefighter, president for five years, treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. He was inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fire Department Hall of Fame, and the Calvert County Volunteer Fire Department Hall of Fame. Jesse is a member of the American Legion, Gray-Ray Post #220 and served as First Vice Commander for several years. Jesse’s participation in other civic organizations include chairman of the Calvert County Housing Authority, chairman of the Industrial Park Authority, and Vice Chairman of Calvert County Economic Commission. Jesse served on the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners from 1981-1982. He was an honorary member of Calvert County Joy Riders, Inc. Jesse has always been active in church. He is a past chairman of the Plum Point Trustee Committee and a past member of the Administrative Council. His favorite hymn was “How Great Thou Art.” He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alnutt Jr. and Leslie Reid, and his sister Gladys Sewell. He is survived by his son Jesse Jr. and grandson Jesse III, his sisters Beatrice J. Fletcher and Mildred L. Bailey, sister-in-law Phyllis H. Reid and brother –in-law Maurice Bailey, his step grandson Terrell his wife Randy and daughter Ruth. He will be dearly missed by the Plum Point Church family other relatives and friends.
