John & Eleanor Dykes

Due to the impending weather conditions, the viewing and Eucharist of the Resurrection for Mr. John and Mrs. Eleanor Deykes has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 3. The Eucharist of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 4:00 pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1109 Church Street in Moscow. The viewing will be from 2:00 pm until the time of the Eucharist of the Resurrection at the church. Interment in Fairlawn Cemetery in Dalton will be held privately. Mr. John Deykes, 93, of Moscow died on Monday, February 19, 2018 at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton. Six days later, on February, 25, 2018, his wife of 72 years, Eleanor (Smith) Deykes, joined him in heaven when she died at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore. John was born in Dunmore to the late John and Beatrice (Dainty) Deykes and graduated from Dunmore High School; Eleanor was born in Blakely to the late Robert and Marjory (Stewart) Smith and graduated from West Scranton High School. John went on to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Enlisting on April 7, 1943, he accepted an appointment as a flight officer from November 30, 1944 until November 30, 1945. John was awarded the WWII Victory Medal & The American Theater Campaign Ribbon. One day while ice skating in Nay Aug Park, John and Eleanor met and ever since then, they've held hands skating through their life together. While Eleanor stayed at home to raise their family, John worked for the Bell Telephone Company and after 33 years of service, he retired in 1980. John & Eleanor were faithful members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Moscow, where Eleanor served on the Alter Guild and John previously served as the treasurer. Continuing in service to their community, John was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Eleanor was a member of the Moscow Women's Club, a Girl Scout troop leader and served on the board of directors for the Scranton Girl Scout Council. Traveling in their RV, they visited over 30 states, including Alaska, making memories with their family as the drove along. They also enjoyed camping, canoeing, bowling and tending to their garden. In their younger years, John enjoyed speed skating, cross country and downhill skiing and while in high school Eleanor loved being a cheerleader. Both were talented artists, John a woodworker, crafting many works of art in the shop in his basement and Eleanor was a skilled seamstress. Throughout all of their lives, John and Eleanor always put the time spent with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren ahead of all else, making sure that their family knew of the love they had for them. They are survived by their children: Donna Caputo of Clifford, Jan Thomas of Westerville, OH, Karen Hnatusko of Claremare, OK, Allison Thomas and her husband Al of Roaring Brook Twp and John Deykes and his wife Ela of Mission Viejo, CA; John's sister: Edna Lesh of Newburgh, NY; their grandchildren: Leslie Hesser, Tracy Davis, Tre' Thomas, Elena Thomas, Dr. Shane Hnatusko, Dr. Aubrey Flanders, Albert John “AJ” Thomas, Willow Thomas, Naya Deykes & Tiana Deykes; their great grandchildren: Riley & Reghan Hesser, Morgan & Marissa Davis and Cooper & Knox Thomas and their precious beloved furry canine friend: Lacey. John and Eleanor were preceded in death by Eleanor's sister: Janet Smith and John's sister: Helen Weinschenk. The Eucharist of the Resurrection for John & Eleanor will be on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1109 Church St in Moscow to be celebrated by The Reverend Earl Trygar with The Reverend Daniel Jones as Homilist. Interment will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery in Dalton, where the members of the U.S. Army will render military honors to John. Viewing will be on Friday, March 2 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, LLC 3 First St in Spring Brook Twp.
