Gene L. DeCondo 1928-2018 Whitesboro, NY Gene L. DeCondo 89 of Whitesboro peacefully went to the Lord on Monday February 19th, 2018 with his family by his side. He was born on April 26th, 1928 in Utica, a son of Giuseppe and Vincenza (Zinicola) DeCondo. He was a 1947 graduate of Proctor High School where he was a three sport athlete. Gene joined the Army and was a proud veteran of the Korean War and served between 1948-1951. He attended Utica College where he studied engineering. On June 22nd 1963 he married the love of his life Maffalda (Virginia) Gentile, and they enjoyed a 54 year union. Gene worked at Griffiss Air Force Base for 37 years receiving many commendations during a distinguished career where he traveled the world working in radar and communications. Gene was a gentle soul, known for his kindness, patience, and nurturing way. These qualities made him an outstanding teacher. He combined his love of baseball and kids, and spent many years coaching in the Whitestown Youth Association. He coached all levels of Baseball, and eventually became the coach of the Whitestown Legion team. Kids loved playing for “Mr. D”. Gene was a great player in his own right, playing for a powerhouse Proctor team, in the West Coast league while in the service, and in the local Muny leagues. He was an avid Yankee’s fan and he always enjoyed talking baseball with family and friends. Gene was a devoted family man, and he lived his life selflessly and in the service of others. Whether grandchild, wife, brother, sister, niece, nephew, son or daughter, he made each feel special and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family and friends. Gene was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, and their many successes. He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Jeannine Reynolds and her husband Dr. Craig Reynolds of Camillus, son Geno DeCondo of Whitesboro, and son Donald DeCondo of Floyd. Seven cherished grandchildren, Caitlyn Mackos, Thomas Pritchard, Madison Pritchard, Samantha DeCondo, Baylee Reynolds, Courtney Reynolds, and great grandson Terrence Mackos. He also leaves his beloved Brother Victor DeCondo of Utica, and many nieces and nephews who loved Uncle Gene, and that meant so much to him. He was predeceased by his parents, four sisters; Pirina and husband John Altieri, Anne and husband John Belmont, Katie and husband Vic Calamusa, and Pia DeCondo, and two brothers; Anthony and his wife Theresa, and Joseph and his wife Louise, and two nephews Joseph DeCondo and Dr. John Altieri. The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Michael Kelberman and Dr.Christopher Clark for their compassionate care. During the past year Gene also received tremendous support from nieces Cathy Ducato, Patricia Dispirito, nephew Joey DeCondo, and many friends and neighbors but especially Betty and Harold Rieben, and Mary Collea Manna. Family and Friends are invited to attend Gene’s funeral services which will be held on Monday March 5th at 11:30 am at St Paul’s Church in Whitesboro. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Gene to the Whitestown Youth Association, The Gene DeCondo recreation fund at Upstate Cerebral Palsy, or a charity of your choice.
