DURHAM: Mary Anne P. Holmes, 89, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at Carillon Assisted Living. She was born in Durham, the daughter of the late Bessie Wallace Powers. She was predeceased by her husband, A. W. "Bill" Holmes; sons, Art Holmes and Gary Holmes; sisters, Dot Pickett, Betty King and Aunt and Uncle, Nellie and Otha "Jack" Garrard. Mrs. Holmes retired from Garrison Insurance Company and Eave’s Insurance Company after 45 years and became a receptionist at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church until she was 80 years old. She was a very active member of Grey Stone Church since she was 10 years old, participating as a Children’s Sunday School Teacher for over 25 years and the Children’s Choir, and participated in the Adult Choir and the Senior Adult Choir and the first years of the Living Christmas Tree performances. She was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Holmes loved gardening and cooking for her family. And she loved helping her husband, Bill with his famous frozen lemonade! Mrs. Holmes is survived by her grandchildren, Jeff Holmes (Karen), Kevin Holmes (fiancé, Maddie), Tyler Holmes; great grandchildren, Annie Lyn Holmes, Benjamin Clark Holmes; and daughter-in-law, Dianne Holmes Duke (Ron). A funeral service will be held 12 pm, Friday, February 23, at Grey Stone Church in Durham with Dr. Clay Waters officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 to 11:45 am, at the church.
