April 19, 1945---February 3, 2018 Loren Shortridge, 72, a longtime resident of the Brownsville/Halsey area, passed away on February 3rd, 2018. Most of his family were at his side in the Hospice House in Albany. Loren had been ill for about a year in which his family rallied around him to take care of him at their home in Halsey. He was born in Cottage Grove. Loren lived briefly in Lorraine, Oregon and Newport, but spent most of his childhood and adult life in Brownsville. After graduating from Central Linn High school, he began working with Schnieder Lumber Company Sawmill before being drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War as a medic where he learned to be a surgical assistant at Walter Reed army hospital near Washington DC. The Army managed to send him traveling to other places, California, Texas, Philadelphia and Maryland. After his service in the Army Loren returned to Brownsville and remained there most of his life. He re-started his career with Schnieder in Brownsville, and retired from the Willamette Industries sawmill at Coburg as a saw filer in 1997. This job turned out to involve many skills that he loved. He returned to work at Albany General Hospital for a time as an instrument sterilizer before finally retiring in 2004. Loren met his wife Roberta Putman in the Brownsville area and they were married on July 30, 1970. Very early on, they bought a home in Brownsville and lived there for a few years before moving to their farm near Halsey where the family currently calls home. Loren & Roberta spent most of their married life together on the farm. Loren enjoyed doing many things in his lifetime. Some of those things included boating, carpentry, welding, collecting things, making wine and he was even a rock hound, cutting and polishing rocks. Loren loved taking care of animals on the farm, including cows, horses, dogs, and cats. He loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his father, O. Clifton Shortridge and his mother, Dorothy Shortridge (Burgess). Loren is survived by his wife Roberta of 47 years; brother Barney & his wife Judy of Deer Park, WA.; daughter Loreen Rowe & her husband Jim of Alaska, and son Robert & his wife Kimberley of Moore, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kyle Shortridge, Oklahoma, Karrah Shortridge, Oklahoma, niece Marcia Shortridge, Tacoma, WA.
