Dr. Walter A. Brower of Hamilton, NJ passed away on February 3, 2018. Born and raised in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Chatsworth, NJ, on January 9, 1927, he resided in Chatsworth, Mt. Holly, Ewing, and Hamilton during his lifetime. Dr. Brower was predeceased by his parents, Walter A. Brower Sr. and Anna Ritzendollar Brower, his two sisters Grace B. Donnelly and her husband Earl, and Almeda B. Shaner and her husband John. A loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Virginia (Musson) Brower, son Douglas W. Brower and his wife Daphne of Ewing, NJ, daughter Barbara Brower and her partner Denise Sharpe of Pt. Pleasant, NJ, grandchildren Kyle Brower, Nicholas Brower, Cameron Brower and Daphne Brianna (Brower) Sipes and her husband Hunter, sister-in-law Sally Udy and her husband Ronald of Woodstown, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Brower received his B.S. from Rider College in Business Education and his Ed.M and Ed.D from Temple University. Upon graduation from Rider College in Lawrenceville, NJ in 1948, he immediately joined the faculty of Rider. In 1950, he was granted a military leave of absence to serve in the US Air Force for three years during the Korean War, serving in Texas and Tokyo, Japan, achieving the rank of Captain. Dr. Brower proudly served Rider College, now Rider University, with distinction for over 45 years, and he continued that service even after his retirement, right up until his death. He was Dean of Education for 21 years and under his leadership, Rider’s School of Education received national accreditation. His service to Rider University came in many capacities including his roles as Professor, Dean of Education and Human Services, Acting Vice President, Director of Graduate Study, Chairman of the Athletic Council, and member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. Rider University bestowed the title of Dean Emeritus on him upon his retirement. In his retirement, he served as Adjunct Professor of Education for 16 more years! Dr. Brower is the author of Rider College: The First One Hundred Years (1965) and Full of Promise: The Story of Rider College 1865 to 1994 (1997). Dr. Brower and his wife, Shirley, were strong advocates and supporters of the Rider University athletic programs and could be seen at many men’s and women’s basketball games over the years. A dedicated educator who touched thousands and thousands of lives through his work at Rider University and beyond, Dr. Brower was a speaker and presenter at over 400 professional development conventions, seminars, conferences, and workshops that took him to 46 states and 4 foreign countries. He was a recipient of many honors including the John Robert Gregg Award for Distinguished Service in Business Education, the most prestigious national award in business education, the Professional Certificate of Merit for Distinguished Service Award given by the faculty of the College of Education at Rider University, and the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award in 1965 for Distinguished Teaching at Rider University. On September 14, 2014, Rider University recognized Dr. Brower for his service by awarding him the Sesquicentennial Medal as part of Rider University’s 150th anniversary. Dr. Brower was an author of a textbook, Systems for Administrative Office Support with the McGraw-Hill Company in 1976, 1981, 1988. Dr. Brower was a leader in education which was exemplified in many ways including through his roles as President of the National Business Education Association, President of the NJ Business Education Association, Vice President of the Eastern Business Education Association, Founding President of the NJ Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Founder of the NJ Teacher Education Roundtable, Founding President of the Alpha Zeta Chapter, Delta Pi Epsilon at Temple University, Member of the Mt. Holly Board of Education and Member and President of the Ewing Township Board of Education. Dr. Brower was a member of the Board of Trustees of Berkeley College and the Woodland Park, NJ campus library is named the Dr. Walter A. Brower Library in recognition of his work there. Being a true piney, Dr. Brower never forgot where he came from. He loved the people and the region of the NJ Pine Barrens and visited often, keeping up with family and friends. He was a member of the Woodland Township Historical Society. He also contributed to many news articles and documentaries over the years on the infamous 1939 Blue Comet train crash in Chatsworth, where he and a friend were the first on location and assisted injured passengers off of the train. He is co-author of Chatsworth: Capital of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Arcadia Publications (2010). Burial will be private. A celebration of Dr. Walter A. Brower’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, 2688 Main Street (Rt. 206), Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Walter A. Brower ‘48 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
