Raymond J. Haas, 81, of Canton, Ohio, passed away January 29, 2018 after a sudden illness. He was a generous, loving, and kind man in all his roles as Son, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Partner. Ray always strived toward creating harmony in the world, and was an endless source of support and compassion to his family and friends.
Raymond was born in Louisville, Ohio and spent his youth on his family’s farm, where he formed and nurtured his strong work ethic. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and then went on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Dayton. After spending a short time in the Army as a teaching Lieutenant, he earned his Professional Engineering License and worked for Ohio Power Company for decades, developing and securing multiple patents used by the company to this day. He continued his career as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Stark State College, where he eventually ascended to the position of Engineering Department Head. He was also an active member of multiple engineering societies, and won the CRSPE “Engineer of the Year” award. He also loved flying and was a licensed pilot with an instrument rating.
Raymond is survived by three children, Monique (Chris) Swiger, John Haas and Alexander (Morgan) Haas, his partner Phyllis Spees, his best friend Edward Warner, his former wife and friend Suzanne Haas, his grandchildren Roland and Derek Swiger, and Rowyn, Alsey and Bristin Haas, and many cousins he was fortunate enough to stay close with during his life. We will all miss him, as will others who were lucky enough to have him in their lives.
