Braintree – Joseph “Joe” Murphy passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at the age of 84. Son of Joseph and Catherine Murphy, he was born on July 9, 1939 and raised in South Boston. After the passing of his mother, he was later raised by his step-mother, the late Hope Murphy. He began his career at Capital Supermarket and was fondly known as “20 Below Joe” for his time spent working in the freezers. He served in the National Guard and then joined the Braintree Police Department as a patrolman where he served for 37 years, retiring in 2004.
In 1963, he met the love of his life, Lillian (Fyre) Murphy, his wife of 60 years. He was the devoted father of Sean and Tim Murphy, loving father-in-law of Lucinda Murphy and affectionately known as “Papa” to his grandchildren, Amanda and Zachary Murphy. He is the brother of Louise Thistle and the late Mary LaGarde. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joe was well known in the community for his friendly personality and sense of humor. He rarely went anywhere without running into someone he knew. He enjoyed spending time with his family, vacationing in Chatham, MA and trying his luck at scratch tickets and Keno, often sharing his occasional winnings with his family and grandchildren. His generous nature and compassionate heart will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
