Herman Lyle Hill

Herman Lyle Hill, 82 years of Midland, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 at StoryPoint in Midland. He was born August 18, 1934 in Cedarville, son of the late Thomas and Thyra (Windberg) Hill. Herman attended Cedarville schools graduating from high school in 1953. While living in Cedarville, he played high school basketball and attended Bethel Lutheran Church. Herman went on to attend Alma College graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1959. After his first college graduation, Herman married the former Verna P. Leach on June 26, 1959. Later, Herman obtained his first Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University in 1962 and then his second Master’s Degree in 1964. He taught math in Onekema until 1959. Herman then went on to teach math at Northeast Intermediate from 1960-1992. He was always devoted to educating others and received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Gerstacker family in 1975. Herman was also a dedicated baseball coach and enjoyed bowling with his league and playing cards. He also spent many hours in the great outdoors whether it was hunting, gardening, or fishing. Herman also worked with 4-H and helped build many houses. He was also curious about his ancestry leading him to take an interest in genealogy. Herman was a devout Lutheran for 56 years and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. There he spent many hours helping and partaking in numerous activities. His faith also led him to give to many charities and help anyone in need. Herman enjoyed spending the winters in Florida but more than anything, he loved spending time with his family. Herman is survived by his wife Verna of Midland; his children Marlene Hill of Portage, Marilyn (Paul) Shankus of Grayson, GA, Mary Ellen (Bill) Walls of Augusta, Michael (Dawn) Hill, and Kathryn Hartnagle and her friend Brenda all of Midland; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his brothers Ronald (Mary) Hill and Gerald (Venitta) Hill all of Cedarville; sister Sylvia (Gary) Peterson of Harrisonville, VA; sister-in-law Marian Hill of Cedarville; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by his brother Edward Hill. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 16, 2016 from Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Gerald Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarville, MI. Herman’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Thursday from 4-7 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Trinity Lutheran Church or the charity of their choice in Herman’s memory. Funeral arrangements for Herman have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors.
