Donald W. Berner Obituary

Donald W. Berner, long-time resident of Midland, Michigan, and recently of West Branch, Michigan, died Sunday evening, January 22, 2017 at his residence. He was 89 years old. The son of the late Ernest John and Erna (Kussrow) Berner was born on October 5, 1927 in Bay City, Michigan. He retired in 1985 from the Midland Fire Department as its Assistant Chief. He was a member of United Church of Christ in Midland and had been active in the Crump Fox Club. He had been an avid hunter and a fan of the Lions and Tigers. Surviving him are his three daughters, Teresa Sheltrown and her husband Joel of West Branch; Joni Berner and her husband Edwin Hemwall of Villanova, PA; and Peggy Berner of Bay City; five grandchildren, Alison Sheltrown of Grand Rapids.; Nick Sheltrown and his wife Patti of Grand Rapids; Donald Sheltrown and his wife Karolina Zakonek of West Branch; Haley Hemwall of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and James Hemwall of Philadelphia, PA; and two great-grandchildren, Eden and Elizabeth Sheltrown. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Dallas Mowery, two sisters-in-law, Irene Berner and Belva Govitz, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. On July 1, 1950 he married the former Nora Jean Bergman, who preceded him in death on February 11, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Martin Berner and sister-in-law, Phyllis (Luttrell) Berner; his brother, Richard Berner; his sisters and brothers-in-law Irene and Roy Schular, and Madeline and Robert VanSickle; his parents-in-law, Lawrence Franklin and Myrtle “Peggy” (Parkinson) Bergman; brothers-in-law and their wives, William and Mildred (McKinney) Bergman, Thomas and Rosalie (Gerhart) Bergman, and Calvin and Bernice (Russell) Bergman; brother-in-law, David Bergman; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Marjorie and Lawrence Arehart and Eleanor and Richard Tucker; sister-in-law, Anne Mowery; and great-grandson, Isaiah Sheltrown Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2017, at the United Church of Christ, 4100 Chestnut Hill Dr. in Midland. Rev. Roger Pancost will officiate. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the United Church of Christ.
