Phyllis LaVera Hege, 84, of Bellflower, CA, formerly of Oxford, KS, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her daughters on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Oxford Christian Church, graveside services will follow at the Oxford Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM Friday, September 29, 2023 at the Oxford Funeral Service Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norman Hege Memorial Pavilion at Southwestern College, donations may be left in the care of the Oxford Funeral Service – PO Box 123 Oxford, KS 67119.
Phyllis was born on July 3, 1939 in Kingfisher, OK, to parents Thomas Ohio and Valda Adeline (Wilhelm) Phillips. She graduated from Arkansas City High School. On December 20, 1959 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Norman Edward Hege. Phyllis was a longtime resident of Oxford and was a librarian for 30 years. Phyllis started the summer reading program, she enjoyed the storytelling hour at the library, doing photography for the Oxford Register, volunteering for anything in the Oxford community, she also enjoyed performing Kansas and Native American History Lectures. More than anything she loved her family.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters Crystal Hege, Ginger Hege, Jill Hege-Capron (Marty) and sons Jon Hege (Megan), and Hannu, grandchildren Kennedy, Sawyer, and Kaden, brother-in-law Keith Hege and numerous family members, friends and caregivers.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Tommy Gay Evans, Jonie Jene Pitt, Sylvia Howard, brother David Harned, nephew Steven Evans and favorite canine daughter Sweet Pea.
