George Sweeney, 94, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Towanda, passed away peacefully at 12:34 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ.His funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Epiphany Church, Normal, where visitation will be hour prior to services. Monsignor Eric Powell will officiate. Interment will immediately follow services at Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Sweeney. George was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Kathryn Lorraine Schopp Sweeney.He leaves behind three children, Robert L. (Rebecca) Sweeney of Scottsdale, AZ, John B. Sweeney and Sheryl Jacobson, both of Phoenix, AZ.His childhood was spent in Towanda, IL on a family farm. George attended both Towanda Elementary and High School before leaving for college at Illinois Wesleyan University. He was employed by General Electric for 20 years and he served honorably in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Bronze Star.A devout Catholic, he was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
