Joel Greenberg passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on July 12th, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Joel lived life to the fullest, and his journey enriched the lives of many. He was intelligent, handsome, tenacious, and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of history, politics, and literature. Joel took great pride in being born in the Bronx. His father, Meyer, a pharmacist, and mother, Gertrude, a teacher, instilled in him the importance of education, leading Joel to attend the Bronx HS of Science. He later graduated from Syracuse University and culminated his academic journey with a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1954. Soon after, Joel worked as an assistant counsel for the general counsel in the office of the Navy, followed by the New York office of the FTC.

Joel's political career began in 1962 when he was elected to the Pittsfield City Council. In 1964, he was elected as a Massachusetts House Representative, marking the beginning of his shining political career. Joel served three terms during which he played a crucial role in the passage of several significant civil rights and women's rights laws in the state. He served in the House alongside luminaries such as Dukakis, and his leadership achievements were widely recognized, as reflected in several newspaper articles.

After completing three terms, Joel left to become the assistant attorney general for consumer protection, where he continued to fight for the rights and welfare of his constituents. Throughout this time, he also maintained a private law practice in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Joel was a dedicated advocate, championing numerous noble causes using words instead of weapons, benefiting us all.

Joel was a past president of Temple Anshe Amunim and was dedicated to the Jewish community locally and Israel.

Above all, Joel was a loving husband to Carol for 66 years; they were inseparable. He adored his children, Susan, Peter, and Betsy, as well as his son-in-law Nat, and derived immense joy from spending time with his grandchildren, Eitan, Madeline, Jeremy and wife Amanda.

Joel is also survived by his loving brother, Fred, and his family.
