Roberta (Bert) McAfee, 93, of Pana, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018, at her home in Hickory Estates in Pana. She was born on September 26, 1924, in Ohlman, Illinois, the first of six daughters born to Rollie Monroe and Ruby Henrietta (Brown) Durbin. She graduated from Nokomis High School in 1942. She moved to Decatur and married Charles J. Hopwood of Nokomis on April 23, 1944. They lived in Decatur and other communities before settling in Decatur for 37 years. He passed away February 23, 1986. They had two sons: James and Rodney. Rodney passed away December 2, 2013. On November 19, 1994, Roberta married Darrell B. McAfee of rural Rosamond. He passed away October 20, 2011. She worked for Illinois Power Co. in Decatur for 31 years. She loved needlework, garage sales, camping, reading and spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, the Rev. James (Linda) Hopwood of Spring Hill, Kansas; five granddaughters, Bethany (Jeff) Neufarth of Florrisant, Missouri; Shanna (Dallas) Gregory of Springfield, Illinois; Jennifer (Tim) Hopwood Dickson of Omaha, Nebraska; Scottilynn (Keith) Scott of Pocahontas, Illinois; and Erica Hopwood of Manhattan, Kansas; sister-in-law, Melba Cassidy of Ohlman, Illinois; stepson, Dwain (Rhonda) McAfee of Pana, Illinois; stepdaughters: Diane (George) Stone of Spalding, Illinois; Denise Downs of Pana, Illinois; and Kris McAfee of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; on the Hopwood side 9 great-grandchildren and on the McAfee side 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husbands, Charles and Darrell; her son Rodney and daughter-in-law Kay Hopwood; stepson, Delmer McAfee; and her sisters Evelyn Barnstable, Shirley Boland, Audrey Sibert, Rebecca Currence, and Esther Klaus. Memorials may be made to the Community Presbyterian Church of Rosamond, Pana Community Hospital Foundation, or the BRS Baseball Museum in Nokomis. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Nance officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Decatur. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time in the funeral home.
