Jean Roberts Bates

Jean Roberts Bates, age 91, of Warrenton, VA passed peacefully at Fauquier hospital on Sunday, December 24th, 2017 after a long illness. She was born in Rocky Mount, NC on October 20th, 1926, daughter of the late Carl & Sadie Roberts. She was a former resident of Newport News Va. She was a member of the Warrenton Baptist Church in Warrenton and a former member of the Second Presbyterian Church in Newport News, Va. Jean is survived by two sons, David K. Bates & his wife, Karen of Warrenton, VA and Daniel B. Bates of Falls Church, VA; five grandchildren, Shannon C. Bates, Zachary W. Bates & Ryleigh A. Bates, all of Warrenton, Sarah Smith Shayban of Charleston, SC and Kathryn W. Smith of Houston, TX; brother, Norris K. Roberts; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Norman J. Bates; daughter, Allyson Bates Smith; and three sisters, Margaret R. Weaver, Mildred R. McKay, and Charlotte R. Orr A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 30th, 10 am at Peninsula Memorial Park cemetery, 12750 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA.
