Dr. Amit Malkani Obituary

Dr. Amit Shanker Malkani passed away in a tragic accidental drowning on vacation with his family in the Maldives on June 20, 2023 while protecting his nephew in the ocean. He was an extraordinarily loving and giving family physician, brother, son, and uncle.

Amit received his undergraduate degree from NYU and studied for his master's degree at Harvard University. He completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Touro University and his family medicine residency at York Hospital in Pennsylvania. He went on to become an attending family physician, specializing in would care and osteopathic manipulative medicine. Dr. Amit Malkani is also among the few deaf physicians in the United States to practice medicine.

Over the past five years, he worked with the United States Coast Guard as a civilian physician and was known for developing a program to rehabilitate injured Corpsman with water and physical therapy to improve recovery outcomes. Amit always said, "You must find joy in what you are doing. My joy is going to work early and helping the Corpsman rehab in the water. Pure medicine".

Amit reveled in the wonder of life and celebrated living with  travel, tennis, swimming, scuba diving, rock climbing, and trying new foods and restaurants. Amit had an adventurous spirit cherishing his time with his friends and family.

Dr. Amit Shanker Malkani is survived by his dear mother Dr. Raj S Malkani, dedicated father Shanker D. Malkani, his loving sister, Dr. Sona M. Garg, brother-in-law Dr. Manish Garg, nieces Arya Savi and Moxa Garg, and his nephew Rohan Garg.

He will be missed dearly and his humble, honest, witty, intelligent, fun, kind, and thoughtful nature will be celebrated by all who were luck enough to know him.

Funeral services for Amit Malkani will take place Saturday, July 1, 2023 from 9-11am at Franklin Memorial Park. Franklin Memorial Park is located at 1800 Route 27 in North Brunswick, NJ.

A GoFundMe account has been set up in honor of Amit. All donations will be used to establish an annual scholarship fund for a United States Coast Guard Corpsman that exhibits resilience, determination, and a zest for life.
