Donna B Renshaw Obituary

“To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world” Dr.Seuss

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our loved one , Donna Beatrice Renshaw (nee Hickey) RN, BN, CNOR, RNFA after her courageous battle with cancer at the Down East Community Hospital in Machias Maine on Sunday June 4 at the age of 53.

She remains forever cherished and loved by her husband Matt of 22 years, her daughter Amber Farrar(Brock) and her precious grandchildren Matthew, Mackenzie, Max and Hazel. Her parents Anne and Jim Hickey, Brothers James Hickey (Janice), Chris Hickey, Sisters Glenda Rideout(Melvin), Pam Hickey and her many special nephews and nieces. Special friends Katrina Mazgaj, Dr. Massaad and Sue Dorr. Her family at the Down East Community Hospital and a large circle of family and friends.

Donna was predeceased by her grandparents, John R Hickey, Mary A Hickey, Heber Eddy, Lily Eddy and Josephine Eddy.

Donna was a kind , caring , and a blessing to her family , friends, coworkers and all who knew her. Her friendship touched so many hearts.

Like a compass to a lost soul, Donna gave direction. We knew our roles when she was around and we had a purpose. We were accomplished and successful and knew compassion because of her. The ways in which Donna made an impact are countless. To her loving family in Newfoundland belong her roots, growing up years and her long-distance-near-to-heart conversations, encouragement and singing. A short time at the Burin Peninsula Hospital led her to the arctic north and became an adventurous nurse and medivac caregiver . To her close friends, co workers and patients of Down East Community belong the longest temporary turned permanent nursing career of her life. It was here she met her best friend and husband Matt Renshaw. Together they raised a beautiful daughter Amber and are blessed with life’s greatest treasures Matthew, Mackenzie, Max and Hazel.

Donna gave off herself continuously, worked hard long hours so patients could receive their care at DECH. Most don’t even know of her presence because she worked tirelessly behind a surgical mask and gown - willing to pitch in and clean and sterilize and help suture. She did it all. If a patient was not under anesthesia, they may have been treated to her rich singing voice. Happy Birthday, You are my Sunshine and How Great thou Art were just a few songs she would sing to ease the unpleasantness of being in the operating room.

A champion of nurses, Donna rose to the challenge of whatever nursing need presented itself. By becoming the local hospital’s liaison for New England Organ Bank (NEOB), she inspired the entire DECH community to participate in awareness for organ donation and helped the hospital achieve platinum status, the highest level of recognition. She was a willing teacher to younger nurses and to new staff, doctor to housekeeper , it didn’t matter. She demonstrated exceptional nursing care and refused to cut corners. The most important thing she gave patients and her doctors was trust, and trust her they did.

Donna continues to be a champion, leading with compassion. She has moved on from life on this earth to a beautiful heavenly one.

You will always be our sunshine Donna, our only sunshine. You make us happy when sky’s are grey , you’ll never know dear how much we love you , please don’t take our Sunshine away.
