Izaak Orion Card Obituary

Izaak Orion Card was born in Anchorage, Alaska on February 20, 2003 to Mark Owen Card (born in Cardston, Canada) and Holli Follett Card (born in Redwood City, California). He already had two older sisters: Zina and Sydnee. When he was almost four years old, Izaak was thrilled when he finally got a younger brother, Mason, and then later, a younger sister, Carly.

He attended Bowman Open Optional Program and was homeschooled during his elementary school years, then attended Goldenview for middle school. For high school, he attended South Anchorage High in the Engineering program and graduated from Alaska Middle College School in 2021. He played soccer and cross country skied in high school.

Izaak was musically gifted, easily picking up the guitar and piano. He even refurbished an electric guitar for his sister with high hopes of having a “family band.” He was fascinated by high performance cars and was collecting parts so he could rebuild a Nissan 300ZX. Just before leaving on his mission he bought and assembled a collection of over 20 Lego model race cars–and then gave them to his little sister. He was an avid reader, Brandon Sanderson being a favorite author. Izaak loved to cook Sunday dinners with his sisters, often choosing difficult or elaborate dishes. He especially loved recipes from the Double Musky cookbook and always volunteered to make a delicious dessert for Thanksgiving.

At 16, Izaak earned his Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts of America. For his Eagle project, he built a raptor bird aviary for Bird TLC. During Covid, he started working for a computer repair shop in Anchorage and found he was quite good at fixing a myriad of computer problems. He often was roped into fixing other computers outside his job as well.

Izaak was set apart to serve as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Curitiba, Brazil mission on Halloween day of 2022. He flew to the Brazil Language Training Center on November 16, 2022 to learn Portuguese. He loved the Curitiba Brazil temple, especially the beautiful stained glass windows.

Izaak’s favorite scripture about missionary work is found in Moroni 9:6:

And now, my beloved son … let us labor diligently … for we have a labor to perform whilst in this tabernacle of clay, that we may conquer the enemy of all righteousness, and rest our souls in the kingdom of God.

On May 26, 2023, after attending the temple in Curitiba, he and several missionaries were traveling back to their rural area of Tibagi, Paraná, Brazil when their bus was hit by a semi truck, and Elder Card was killed instantly.

Izaak’s name has Hebrew origins, and means “one who laughs or rejoices.” Izaak had the best laugh, and his family rejoices that they could spend 20 years with him.

The Card family is so grateful to the Church and especially the Missionary Department for their efforts to bring Izaak’s remains from Brazil to Anchorage. We cannot imagine how we would have accomplished the complicated task ourselves. We also want to thank Legacy Heritage Funeral Home for helping us arrange the funeral services.
