Sally Swanson, 71, of Avon, passed away on Friday May 26, 2023. She was born October 27, 1951 in Darby, Pennsylvania to John and Gladys Swanson. Sally was a long-time resident of Farmington Woods in Avon where she was active in her community and served the Board of Directors in many capacities. She received her BS in biology from Purdue University followed by her MA in special education and a PhD in school psychology from UConn. She taught middle school science before becoming a guidance counselor at Farmington High School and later took the position of Director of School Counseling in Newington. She was quite accomplished in her profession and continued to share her knowledge after retirement as a professor at both the University of St. Joseph and CCSU and by tutoring many students. Sally was a bright light and gentle soul. She lived her life by giving to others through counselling, volunteering with the Food Bank and the Greater Hartford Literacy Volunteers, and helping many friends in need including her dear friends, Bill and Elie Controvillas. Sally was an avid tennis player and golfer who enjoyed reading, UConn Women’s basketball, politics, traveling to Vero Beach and Maine, and her cats. She was a friend to all and always focused on the greater good in humanity. Sally is survived by her cousins, Jean McWilliams (Ondrea), James McWilliams (Debbie) and Stephen McWilliams (Cathy) as well as countless friends and colleagues.
