Douglas Donald Duncan Obituary

In loving memory of Douglas Donald Duncan, a devoted husband, loving father, favorite uncle, close friend and over-joyed grandfather, who passed away on Saturday May 27, 2023, at the age of 89, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Born in Kingston, Ontario on February 17, 1934, Doug lived on 18 Earl Street with his parents; William Douglas and Muriel Iola, his siblings; William (Brother Bill), Thelma (Thel) and Alvie (brother from another mother) Morris.

Doug loved to dance and he met his wife-to-be, Joan McFadden, at a friend’s wedding, where they danced the night away. Both being members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith, they studied together, served as Pioneers together, continued to dance together and eventually fell in love (together:)

Doug and Joan were married in 1962 and were soon blessed with two children; Karyn Muriel and Andrew William, as well as (over the years) many dogs.

Doug worked for the City of Kingston Parks & Recreation department for 34 years, and over that time he worked as a foreman in many different capacities; dispatch yard, marina (in the summer), ice rinks (in the winter) and manager of the municipal golf course. Because of these various positions throughout the city, Doug knew practically everyone and was well liked by exactly all of them. He eventually worked his way into City Hall, where he held the position of Executive Forman to the City Commissioner until his retirement in 1996.

Doug loved playing with his grand children and could often be found under a table or soaking wet from water balloons, he loved to drive, he loved science fiction books (Dune), movies (2001) and tv shows (Star Trek), he loved comedy movies (Monty Python & Mel Brooks’ films) and any film about historical events, he loved the music of Patsy Cline, Charlie Pride, Neil Diamond and Hank Williams, he also loved musicals (remember the dancing:), the plays of Gilbert & Sullivan, ancient civilizations, going on cruises with family and friends, computers, new inventions (microwave, VCR), jellybeans, chocolate, popcorn, staying up late (eating all of those snacks), taking his family to Disney in a motorhome, playing Euchre (“What’s the name of this game?!”), being called “Papa”; playing with his grandkids (he really liked it:), gardening, researching family histories, walking in the autumn in Kingston and the spring in Vancouver, laughing with friends and just being with his family.

Doug will be dearly missed by his wife of 61 years, Joan; his daughter, Karyn; his son Andrew and his daughter-in-law Melanie; his grandchildren Carter and Eric Douglas; his nieces and nephews, Valerie, Sharon, Kelly, Ian, Bill, Robert, Leah, Bob, Kevin, Kathleen, Michelle, Tom and all of their families; his extended family, the Snaggs, the Beechs and the Jesses; his many friends; his children’s friends; the wonderful souls at Fair Haven that cared for him till his end; and all who knew him.

In dreams I walk with you, in dreams I talk with you - Patsy Cline, Sweet Dreams

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doug’s memory to the Fair Haven Home Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
