Joan Chenery DeCain Obituary

Joan Chenery DeCain passed away peacefully, with immediate family nearby, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Born January 15, 1936, in Brookline, MA, Joan had an active, mischievous, and athletic youth! Joan graduated from Brookline High School and earned a BA from Goucher College. Upon graduation, she moved to Manhattan to join Metropolitan Life. Joan married Vincent F. DeCain in 1959 and they began building their family in Brooklyn, New York and later moved to the Manhattan suburb of Larchmont, New York. Upon Vincent’s appointment to the Nixon Administration, the family moved to Kensington, Maryland. Over the years, she was invited to serve in the Reagan White House as Deputy Head of Presidential Correspondence, and the Director of White House Volunteers. Later, for the George H. W. Bush White House, she served as a Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Correspondence for the First Lady, Barbara Bush. She also enjoyed leadership roles at the Republican National Committee and for the Sergeant at Arms at the US House of Representatives. Additionally, Joan was an active member of, and held Committee and Board assignments, with the Junior League, the Salvation Army, the Chevy Chase Women’s Republican Club, and Welcome to Washington. While working, Joan had a motto that she shared often: “we work hard in the Winter and play hard in the Summer” and she very much enjoyed active Summers with her Family on Cape Cod, MA, in Bay Head, New Jersey and later in Bethany Beach, DE. She is survived by four adult children, Thomas Chenery (Ann Marie), Paul Frederick (Gema), M. Scott (Sandra), and Ann DeCain Kane (Richard), and her 10 wonderful grandchildren, Marshall, Sophia, Olivia, Claire, Pierce, Charleston, Nicholas, Patrick, Alexandra, and Russell. Relatives and friends may call at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5949 Western Avenue NW, Washington, DC on Monday, June 5, 2023, beginning at 10 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
