Charles "Ed" Edwin Mitchell Jr. Obituary

Charles Edwin Mitchell, Jr. West Linn, OR. Passed away 5/27/2023 with his family by his side.

Born 4/15/1949 in Portland, OR to Charles Edwin and Reba Howe Mitchell. He grew up in Fairview, Oregon, with his four siblings. Ed graduated from Reynolds High School in 1967. He met his wife Kathy in 1970, they fell in love and dated long distance for over two years while he was in the Navy. Ed and Kathleen Leitch Mitchell married on November 4, 1972 and had three beautiful children. This last November they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Ed served in the Navy from 1968 – 1973. After his basic training he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, where he was an FTB2 (Fire Control Technician Ballistic) aboard the USS Henry Clay Submarine during the Vietnam War, serving five patrols. The last year of service Ed was stationed in Bremerton, Washington, where he was honorably discharged at an E-5 rating.

After the Navy Ed used his technical training from the Navy to become a Systems Analyst for both Tektronix and Mentor Graphics. He advanced to a Software Engineer and worked for Boeing in the Seattle Area. Ed was determined to get his degree, although his past technical training had already gained the job title he wanted. He continued to go to night school and earned his BA Degree in Computer Science at the age of 62. Ed also obtained his small plane pilot’s license after he got out of the Navy, something he had always aspired to do. He was an all-around talented person, beautiful woodworker, auto mechanic, and general handy man. If something needed to be done, Ed would find a way to do it.

Ed accomplished much in life, as a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He and Kathy were always together, traveling and just having fun in general. They were one. They raised their children in Wilsonville where all of the kids enjoyed doing everything with dad. Riding the tractor, shooting the basketball, building things. Family was the most important thing to Ed.

He loved his children and grandson dearly. Both Mark and Matt flew radio control airplanes regularly with their dad, and so loved being together. He helped them with repairs on their homes and just loved hanging out with them. They shared the love of his Corvette and often took rides with him. His daughter Michelle was his pride also. He loved watching her play so many sports as she grew, and as she became a beautiful wife and mom. He loved the times when her son Malcolm came over to stay and play with Grandpa, build Legos, have pillow fights, and enjoy each other’s company. Ed was so proud of his children’s accomplishments and how close they could be as a family.

Ed is survived by his wife Kathy, children Mark Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Michelle Prost (Andrew), grandson Malcolm Prost. Brothers Mark Mitchell (Jaycn Holden) and Tim Mitchell, sister Holly Mitchell (Philip Jones), sisters-in-law Wilma Snyder, Bonnie Lowe and Alana Snyder, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his parents, Charles Edwin Mitchell Sr., Reba Howe Mitchell, sister Terry Mitchell and sister-in-law Cindy Goss.
