Gertrude R Neumiller Obituary

Gertrude R. Neumiller, 91, of Jamestown, ND, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 30, 2023 at SMP Health- Ave Maria, Jamestown.

Gertrude was born December 10, 1931, near Woodworth, ND, the daughter of Julius and Pauline (Ferl) Hauf.  She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Gerber Township.  Gertrude was united in marriage to Vergil Neumiller on October 14, 1955 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Woodworth, ND.  They lived on the Hauf farm for a few years near Woodworth.  In 1963, they moved to Medina where they made their home for 47 years.

Gert had many talents but foremost among them were probably her cooking and baking!  She prepared fabulous meals for every-day and on the holidays.  Her caramel rolls, chocolate cake, and apple bars were without equal.  Gert kept the family heritage alive by making German-Russian foods such as Strudel which she learned to make from her mother-in-law.  From her own mother she also learned to make potato dumplings just like the family made when they lived in Poland.  Color was added to the holiday meals by serving pickled beets and numerous other items she had canned for the family's enjoyment in the winter time.

Gert's faith was important to her and she could pray and worship God in both German and English.

As a depression-era child, Gert learned to make do with less and could mend clothes, especially jeans, and make them useful for much longer than would seem possible. She also produced many quilts and these are used by her children and grandchildren in their homes.

One of her teachers taught the girls at her school to embroider and as she grew older, Gert used this skill to keep her arthritic fingers limber. She embroidered hundreds of dish towels that were given as gifts and her embroidered dish towels today grace homes all over the United States and Western Europe.

Gert loved playing cards, especially pinochle and whist and she and Vergil played these games with other couples in Medina, other friends, and relatives when they came to visit.

Gert liked to watch basketball games and more recently she and her friend Betty Gallahan enjoyed watching baseball games on television.

Gert was the master of entertaining stories, snappy comebacks, and quippy one-liners!  Her sense of humor came through in all of them.

Known as Grandma Gert to her own grandchildren and great-granddaughter, many other people refer to her as Grandma Gert as well.

Grandma Gert played a role in the upbringing of all of her grandchildren and took care of them on many occasions whenever the childrens' parents needed her. She also baby sat children in Medina and she supported the all the way through their high school graduation by cheering for them in sports, etc.

Gert worked as an aide and a cook at Central Dakota for over a quarter century and she was proud of her time there.  She had a deep affection for Ave Maria which is the present name of Central Dakota.  The family wishes to express sincere gratitude for the quality of care and quality of life the administration, staff, and residents gave to Grandma Gert during her time there during the final chapter of her life.

Gertrude is survived by daughters, Carol (Lonny) Brakel, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Jennie Walker, Jamestown; son-in-law, Bradley Gabrielson, Jamestown; daughter-in-law, Jana Neumiller, Wahpeton, ND; six grandchildren, Amber Dockter (Jason Sundberg), Ana (Colin) Geray, Zach Gabrielson (Krystle Hayes), Lena Brakel (James Hallermann), Allison Walker and Nicole Walker; step-grandsons, Tyson (Lindsey) Walker and Brent (Lacie) Walker, one great-granddaughter, Paisley Gabrielson, and three step-great-grandchildren Isaac, Beau, and Avaleigh Walker; sister-in-law, Lois (Neumiller) Weber Lakewood, California, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Vergil; her parents; son, Doug; daughter, Polly; son-in-law Timothy Walker; infant sister, Emma; sister, Frieda Hauf; and brothers, William, Rudolph, Martin, Gustav, Otto and Walter.
