Edith H. Toms Obituary

Edith H. Toms, age 97 of Naperville, passed away May 27, 2023. She was a member of Grace Church, Leisurettes, Welcome Wagon and the Naperville Gardening Club. She volunteered at Serendipity in downtown Naperville. She was born on July 16, 1925 in Chatham, New Jersey to Charles and Lillian Anderson.

Our mom, Edith, will be remembered as a model 1950’s homemaker raising three children, a cat, a dog and basically running the entire show while dad was off inventing things at Bell Laboratories. She settled all neighborhood kid disputes, fixed bicycles and kites, managed the heating oil truck deliveries, voted for Ike and worked for the scientists who brought us Nylon plastic. She did all this post WWII while Sputnik was flying overhead. In the meantime, dad always thought he had it so tough! Like her Swedish father, mom was reserved at times and other times stubborn as heck! In the mid 70’s she began losing her sight and was legally blind by the early 80’s. Did that stop her? No! Determined, stubborn and blind, she began volunteering, dog sledding, kayaking, gardening alone (while holding a rope tied to the house), cooking (almost burned the house down) and oh yeah, still raising us three now adult kids! She never complained and we never heard her say a single bad word about anyone or anything. She lived her life on her own terms and she saw to it that we did the same. For all of us, she was someone to aspire to.

She is survived by: Sons, Robert S. Toms (Bev) Warrenville, IL Charles E. Toms (Cathi) Aurora, IL, son in law Dan Findley, 9 grandchildren and14 great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her husband Robert S. Toms and daughter Alice V. Toms Findley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to The Salvation Army. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 14th, 11:00 a.m., at Naperville Cemetery, 705 S. Washington St., Naperville, Illinois.
