Mary (Mhairi) Karwandy Obituary

Mhairi (Morton) Karwandy, 86, of Swift Current, passed away peacefully in the Swift Current hospital on May 28th, 2023 due to health complications.  Mhairi was born on June 12th, 1936 to James and Elizabeth Young Morton in Newmilns, Scotland.  After Mhairi finished school, she went on to study nursing. After graduating nursing & midwifery, she started to travel the world as a traveling nurse which lead her to the Canadian shores on May 1st, 1961 and thereafter moved onto our prairies.  Mhairi met her true love John Karwandy at Swift Current. Mhairi and John got married in 1963 and went on to have 4 children; Elizabeth, Jonathan, Katrina, and Margaret which they raised on the family homestead near Neidpath where Jonny continues to farm. Her home was very welcoming which was evident by the numerous pop in visitors and you rarely left hungry.  In 2000, after the death of her husband, Mhairi moved to Swift Current where she enjoyed retirement. She loved visitors whether it was for an hour or a few days. Her specialties were Grammie buns and chocolate chip cookies, which she often sent home with you.  Mhairi was predeceased by her mother Elizabeth, her father James and stepmother Ella Morton, her loving husband John Karwandy, and her sister Margaret Morton.  She is survived by: her sister Elma (George) Goldie; her daughter Elizabeth (Mark) Martinell, and their children Emma, Matthew, and Jared; her son Jonathan Karwandy; her daughter Katrina Karwandy; her daughter Margaret (Chester) Ehnisz, and their children Amanda and Jace; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.  Services will be held at the graveside at Mount Pleasant Cemetery Block 216 on Friday June 2nd, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Saskatchewan Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (SDHHS), an organization Mhairi felt strongly about.  When you lose someone, your heart isn’t actually broken.  If they loved you, they took a piece, and if you loved them, you gave them a piece.  But there is PEACE in knowing that loving them was worth giving up those pieces.  Arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home, for further information please call 1-306-773-8831 or 1-800-267-6606, or visit our website at www.warrensfuneralhome.com, and express your sympathy to family members on the tribute wall.
