Col. John William McGinnis Sr. (Ret.), 88, died May 25, 2023, in Saint Petersburg, Florida following a long illness.

John was born August 31, 1934, to William J. and Mary McGinnis in Erie, Pa., graduated from Cathedral Preparatory High School and graduated with a B.S. from Gannon College in Erie, Pa. John then entered the U.S. Army as an officer.

John served as a health services comptroller at numerous assignments in Fort Ord, California, San Antonio, Texas, France, Germany and Washington D.C., including comptroller for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. During the early 1980s John served as executive director of the Tri-Services Medical Information System (TRIMIS) Program Office that helped usher military medicine into the digital era.

His military decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.

Following his retirement from the military in John served as President of Health Care Concepts, a health consulting company, before joining Marquette Electronics in Milwaukee, Wi. as their government sales manager.

He was a past member of the American College of Hospital Administrators and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth McGinnis of Saint Petersburg, Fl.; two sons, John W. Jr. (Kathleen), of Bowie, Md., Timothy M. of Saint Petersburg, FL, two daughters, Colleen M. (Jeffery) Gilmore of Clearwater, Fl. and Maureen A. of Saint Petersburg, Fl.; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

His service will be held at 10 a.m. on June 13th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in St. Pete Beach, Fl. followed by the burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Clearwater, Fl.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or the Suncoast Hospice Foundation.  (Links at bottom of this page)
