Barbara Bauche Obituary

BAUCHE – Barbara (nee Yaskowich)

Barb passed away peacefully on May 26, 2023, surrounded by her family. Her Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023 at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Eastend, SK. A reception will follow at the Eastend Memorial Hall.

Barb was born in 1955 in Yorkton, SK to Rose (nee Lewandowski) and Joseph Yaskowich. She attended grade school in Yorkton, SK as well as communities in Alberta. She attended high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, SK. During this time she met her future husband, Dean Bauche. She graduated in 1973.

After a year of classes at the University of Regina, Barb attended the School of Nursing at Wascana Institute in Regina. Barb and Dean married on February 12, 1977. They had five children, Jamie, Brian, Andy, Dani and Jesse.

Barb worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Regional Care Center and later at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford. Her last years were spent providing care in the forensic unit, work which she felt was deeply meaningful.

Barb’s unexpected death has left all who knew her bereft. She was an exceptionally loving and generous person. Her life and energy can be embodied by one of her favourite sayings which she drew from a No Fear shirt in the 90s – “if you are not living on the edge you are taking up too much space”. Barb lived on the edge – literally- living on the coast of Vancouver Island every winter and travelling throughout the world, often to coastal destinations. She also lived with inspiring enthusiasm and abandon – driving fast, creating the biggest, most beautiful gardens, dashing out onto the dangerously thin crust of a Yellowstone geyser, running out into a heavy hailstorm, and renovating multiple houses at a time. Even after having a tracheotomy that made it dangerous for her to be in or on the water, Barb’s family tried ineffectually to keep her from sneaking into pools, hot tubs, and lakes or setting out on the water in dinghies and kayaks. Barb expressed her creativity in many ways, including through landscape architecture, pottery, interior design, and mosaic.

Barb rediscovered her faith in Christ in her early 20s. Her faith became the foundation upon which she lived and loved. She became a Benedictine oblate at St. Peter’s Abby and was inspired to live the Benedictine spirituality centred on gratitude, prayer, humility, and hospitality. Each year on Vancouver Island she worked with her husband Dean to run the Art of Belonging for L’Arche, a community where people who are abled and disabled live and supported each other.

Barb’s way of being was selfless, always making room and caring for others around her. Her home was open to all and her hospitality was second to none. Barb donated her time, energy and money to her community and causes she believed in and acted as surrogate mom, auntie, sister, and sister-cousin to many, touching them all deeply.

In death, Barb has been reunited with her father Joseph Yaskowich, her in-laws Jacquie and Albert Bauche, her brother-in-law Daniel Stoochanoff and her nephew Michael Yaskowich. She is remembered lovingly by husband Dean; her mother Rosie; her children, their partners, and her grandchildren; Jamie Mayoh-Bauche (Ryan), Teddy (11), Arthur (9); Brian Bauche (Sara), Vetra (4); Andy Bauche (Melanie), Scarlett (4), Wren (1); Dani Bauche, Jack (12), Atticus (8); Hugo (5); and Jesse Bauche; her siblings and their partners Ernie Yaskowich (Rhonda), Stacy Garrison (Steve), Wanda Stoltz, Gayle Brodie (Shane) and Bev Toderian (Perry) as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and one great great niece. She is also mourned by her informally adopted children, and her multitude of wonderful, close friends. We who mourn her thank God for the gift of her life and rejoice in how we have been touched by her care, her love, and her faith.

Barb’s greatest joy was being with her children and grandchildren and was deeply invested in each of their lives. She was so dedicated to their pursuits that she would do anything with them including slip & sliding, hauling lumber up steep hills to build not one but three tree forts, sleeping outside under the stars, and tobogganing down one of the cypress hills so steep she injured herself. In honour of her dedication to her grandkids, donations are being accepted to a Gofundme fund in Barb’s name for her grandchildren’s post-secondary education. Donations, as well as ongoing contributions by Dean, will be split evenly among her grandchildren. The Gofundme link can be found at the Memorial Contributions portion of this Obituary and Event Page.
