Phyllis "Oma" Owen
<p>Phyllis “Oma” Johnston Owen, 81, daughter of John A. Johnston Sr. and Margaret Wahler, died at home on May 28th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.</p><p><br></p><p>Phyllis is survived by husband of fifty-nine years, Dr. Tom Owen; daughter, Rev. Elisa Owen (James Peterworth); son, Stephen (Dr. Cindy); and son, Councilman Andrew (Nancy) and grandchildren: Zoe and Catherine Peterworth; Isaac, Eli, and Quentin Owen; and Evelyn and Thomas Owen. She is also survived by brother, John A. Johnston Jr., and sister Judith A. Brand, along with many nieces and nephew. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Carol Frey and Mary Mesker, and brothers Paul and Earl Johnston.</p><p><br></p><p>Phyllis had degrees from Shawnee High School, Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville and worked for over 25 years as a successful businesswoman managing Lafayette Enterprise. Phyllis delighted in family, friends, neighbors, cooking an elaborate weekly meal for family, travel, staying busy, following UL sports, working puzzles and playing just about any game.</p><p><br></p><p>Her body was cremated. Family will receive visitors at Highlands Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 31st, from 3PM to 8PM and a Service of Witness to the Resurrection for Phyllis will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1011 Cherokee Road at 1PM on Friday, June 16.</p><p><br></p><p>Because Phyllis was fortunate enough to be accompanied to her death at home by a chorus of family and friends, she asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her memory to Hildegard House, a home supporting the terminally ill who might otherwise die alone.
