Keshav Lal Gupta

<p>Keshav Gupta, known affectionally as “Kris” by the many people who knew him, passed away on May 27th surrounded by his loving family. Keshav is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kiran Gupta and their sons Sandeep, and Manish, their grandchildren Sanjay, Nikhil and their mother Leslie, Vineet and Anika and Daughter-in-law Swati. Kris was a big part of the central coast community for over 40 years, and played a large role in shaping the Indian-American community across the central coast. Born in Punjab, India in 1941, he grew up in Karol Bagh, New Delhi where he studied at the DAV High School. At a young age he had a desire to help others and was selected for the high regarded Delhi Police Academy, but at his mother’s guidance instead attended Mukand Lal College Jagadhari, and received his Bachelor of Commerce from Jalanda. He moved to London, England at the age of 21. He put himself through college, working multiple jobs at factories and in 1966 received his Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants at the age of 25.</p><p><br></p><p>On Dec 4th 1968, he married Kiran who was to become his wife, lifelong partner, and confidant for more than 50 years. Together they would build a future together for themselves and their family. Keshav was always surrounded by close friends and built a tight-knit community that were striving to build a new life for themselves and their children in a new country. He battled adversity and discrimination to build a future, while also helping his peers and family back home.</p><p><br></p><p>In 1970’s London he worked as a chartered account and financial controller for a number of companies including the early days of Virgin Records and was a frequent visitor to Richard Branson’s as he helped shape his newly formed companies. He was also the financial controller for auto companies and travelled from Germany to Virginia providing his expertise. In the late 70’s he branched out on his own creating multiple businesses including a restaurant, China/Glassware gallery and a Post Office Franchise.</p><p><br></p><p>In 1981, he moved with his family to Pismo Beach where he brought his spirit of entrepreneurship and over the course of the next 40 years would build businesses that spanned across the Central Coast. From Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo to Atascadero, Cayucos, and San Simeon. This included: the Amber Motel, Ocean Palms Motel, Dolphin Cove Motel, Courtesy Inn, Oceanside Inn, Mission Inn, the Jewel of India Restaurant, and Star Video Rentals. In his time, he guided many people across the central coast, and shared his expertise and advice to help others. He was in every way a pillar of the community, and a welcomed confidant to many.</p><p><br></p><p>Keshav will be most remembered for his big heart and willingness to help others. His laugh and energy were infectious and he brought his positive spirit wherever he went. Throughout his life he fought for others, and provided much need financial support to many. He was a force of nature, that always did things his way including whatever he could to make the world a better place for those around him. His love for his children and grandchildren was immense. They were his heart and soul. He will be sorely missed.</p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. A celebration of Keshav’s life will be held on Tuesday June 6th at the Clark Center for Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande at 2pm.
