Obituary

Bettie Jean Johnson, 77, fell asleep peacefully in death at her home in Plainfield, New Jersey, on Monday, May 29, 2023. Bettie was born on June 20, 1945, in Newark, New Jersey. She was the eldest child of the late Charles and Mable Leslie.

She leaves behind her husband of 55 years, Mack Johnson, three daughters, Macklyn Johnson-Baptiste, Meshia Johnson, and Leslie Johnson, one grandson Hilton Baptiste, and four siblings, Charles Leslie, Joanne Cherry, Turhan Leslie, and Virgil Leslie. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Bettie graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963 and attended Drakes Business School. She retired from Bellcore in Piscataway, New Jersey, in 1994 after 20 years of service, and she also had a successful vanpool service while working there.

Although Bettie was soft-spoken and had a quiet nature, she loved life and fought down to the end to stay alive. She had been on Hemodialysis for over 16 years. Although she suffered various medical issues over the years, she had a strong determination to keep living. She was one “tough” lady.

Bettie loved music and loved to sing and even wrote songs to her enjoyment. She even opened up her home so that others could take piano lessons. She would generously help out others whenever she could.

Her mother instilled in her strong moral principles which would continue her entire life. Bettie was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in January 1963. A proud and steadfast Jehovah’s Witnesses, she spoke to others about her beliefs and the grand promises that Jehovah God promises in his word, the Bible. Even during her illness, she would talk to the other patients, nurses, and doctors at the dialysis unit about her Grand Creator. She believed that death was not the end, that because of the ransom sacrifice of God’s son Jesus Christ, we will have a chance to see our loved ones once again in paradise through the resurrection.

We look forward to the day when we will see Bettie again, when God’s promise is fulfilled: “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out…(John 5:28,29).

A Visitation will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ.
