Joyce Arlene Chapman Obituary

Rockland – Joyce (Simmons) Chapman, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 25th, after a long happy life and is now with her Lord and Savior. She was born, May 6th, 1932, in Friendship, Maine the daughter of Ray and Annie (Young) Simmons. She grew up in Friendship where she attended schools through 10th grade, then graduating from Waldoboro High School in 1949.

On Christmas Eve 1949 Joyce married the love of her life, Joseph Chapman. Joe and Joyce shared 64 wonderful years together before his passing in 2013. They made their home in Warren where she was a homemaker raising five children. Later, Joyce became a cook for the old Frank D. Rowe school in Warren. She remained there for 20 years before retiring in 1990. In retirement, she and Joe spent winters in Florida returning home to Maine for the summers at their camp on North Pond.

She was a loving mother to her children as well as to her large extended family, always welcoming any and all new members to the Chapman family. She treasured many lifelong friends she made wherever she lived and worked. Joyce was the pillar of strength for the family. Kind, caring, encouraging and above all a woman of faith. Growing up, she attended the Friendship Methodist Church, after moving to Warren she attended the Warren Baptist Church.

Joyce loved sewing, she became a self-taught master quilter. Over the years she created many beautiful quilts and wall hangings which are works of art. We’ll cherish them as a reminder to us of her love and generosity. She liked to sketch and paint, was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Joyce was an outstanding cook/baker of which her family always looked forward to those special treats she would make especially for them. In mid life she rode her own motorcycle, enjoying summer rides with Joe and some of their friends who also rode. After Joe’s passing, she would often volunteer at a local food pantry. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Besides her husband, Joyce was predeceased by two sons, Larry and Kenny; two sisters, Donna Simms and Eunice Genthner.

She is survived by her three children, Sandra of Union, Jeff of Topsham, Robin and his wife Elizabeth of Winslow; a brother Burton Simmons and his wife Sharon of Florida; 11 Grandchildren – Jennifer Chapman, Carrie Grondin, Matt Chapman and his fiancé Kaitlynn, Brooke Grondin, Shannon Emery and her husband Dennis, Kurt Chapman and his wife Kim, Monica Chapman and her fiancé Sean, Justin Chapman and his wife Debbie, Megan Rowe and her husband James, Bethany Gary and her husband Sean, Wendy Spalding and her husband Mark; twenty-five Great Grandchildren, four Great Great Grandchildren, numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Luc Goudreau whom she lovingly thought of like a son and his wife Diane of Quebec, Canada.
