Mary's middle name was given to her because a cousin's name was Alice Louise Salmon and she told Mary's mom, "Aunt Lena, Louise was a pretty name." She is the eldest child of George Christopher Burkert Sr. and Lena Elizabeth (Kemp) Burkert. They lived at 2165 Ringgold Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Mary had a younger brother, George Christopher Burkert Jr. born in 1935.  Mary married Glenn Edward Eastes on November 19, 1955, at the home of their minister on South Keystone Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. Glenn and Mary had two sons Glenn Edward Eastes II was born on February 28, 1958, and their second son John Daniel Eastes was born on September 21, 1961.

After graduating in June 1949 from Tech High School, she began her career as a secretary for 9 years. When Mary had children, she stayed home for 20 years to raise them. She began a second work career at Fort Benjamin Harrison for 14 years before retiring.

Glenn's parents are George and Myrtle Eastes. They had four children. Donald was the oldest, then Glenn, and two younger sisters Emily and Marilyn. A nephew Glenn Curtis lived with George and Myrtle during the 1940 census. They lived in Ward 17, Indianapolis, Center Township, Marion County, Indiana. Mary's husband Glenn at age 62 passed away on May 27, 1991, and is buried at New Crown Cemetery on Churchman Avenue, Indianapolis.

Mary was a tourist in Havana in 1953 when Castro was a guerrilla leader in the hills.

Chased by a roadrunner in Nevada - Mary and her cousin Nancy Magill on a gambling trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, took a bus trip to see the Hoover Dam. They had hoped to see some wildlife on this trip. After stopping to have something to eat as they were leaving the restaurant, Mary saw this bird, a roadrunner, down at the other end. The roadrunner saw Mary and came right down and kept following her around. It was so funny, and they cracked up with laughter.
