J. Hermina Diekevers Obituary

Mrs. Hermina Diekevers, age 96, of Hospers, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, at the Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, May 30, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, May 31, at 10:30am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Hospers with the Rev. Milton Sikkema officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hospers Cemetery.

Johanna Hermina, and her twin brother, John Harold, were born on November 28, 1926, to Henry and Nellie (Van Engen) Kosters, on the family’s farm near Doon. She grew up on the farm and attended a nearby country school and the Doon Christian School. As a young woman, Hermina briefly moved to Michigan before settling in Sheldon, where she worked at the Grey Shop. While living and working in Sheldon, she met her future husband, Raymond Diekevers, after he returned home from serving overseas.

Hermina and Ray were united in marriage on August 22, 1950, at the Christian Reformed Church in Doon. Together they made their home and raised their family on a farm north of Hospers. In addition to being a wife and mother, Hermina routinely helped with chores on the farm and worked at Frank’s Clover Farm Grocery in Hospers. In 1985, the couple moved to a home in Hospers, and Hermina worked part-time at Hospers Furniture. Raymond passed away on March 30, 2011, in Orange City, after more than sixty years of marriage. In 2017, Hermina moved to Sioux Center, where she has since made her home at the Crown Pointe Estates.

Mrs. Diekevers was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers and participated in the church’s Dorcas Women’s Bible Study. She was also a long-time member of the Hospers American Legion Auxiliary. Hermina loved being outdoors and was an avid vegetable and flower gardener for most of her adult life. After retiring into town, she enjoyed going for walks, often with her neighbors and friends, as well as traveling south with Ray for a few weeks each winter. Above all, she looked forward to spending time with her family, and regularly hosted them for holidays and special occasions.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Lyle and Linda Diekevers, of Hospers; Linda and Harlan Huizenga, of Orange City; Nola and Charles Van Driessen, of Sioux Center; and Connie and Ronald Van Wyk, of Alton; twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn and Don De Boer, Steven and Esther Diekevers, Nathan and Leslie Huizenga, Joslyn and Wade Hofland, Aaron and Kim Huizenga, Tina and Josh Folkerts, Lori and Brent De Jong, Rachel and Nate Ronsiek, Jason and Amanda Van Driessen, Jesse and Whitney Van Wyk, Josh and Brittany Van Wyk, and Andy and Jill Van Wyk; 42 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Alice Kosters, of Rock Valley; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by Ray’s parents, Neal and Jennie Diekevers; two brothers, John Kosters, and his wife, Lucille; and John Harold Kosters; two sisters and their husbands, Jeanette and Mynard Van Tol, and Henrietta and Dell Faber; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Gerrit and Julia Diekevers.

Memorials will be given to the Sioux Center Health Hospice and Home Care.
