Stephen Gregory Soule

Stephen G. Soule, VMD

(December 28, 1947 - May 25, 2023)

Stephen Gregory Soule was born December 28, 1947 in Milford, Connecticut to Virginia and Chester Soule, Jr. He spent most of his growing up years through high school in suburban Bethesda, Maryland, moving briefly to a farm near Frederick, Maryland where formative experiences tending, riding, and showing horses informed much of his future passion for a profession as an equine veterinarian. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, majoring in Biology. Subsequently, he attended the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1973 and interning at the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania.

He started his career as the racetrack vet for the Pennsylvania State Racing Commission at Penn National Race Course. He was a partner in creating the Delaware Equine Center in Cochranville, Pennsylvania where he specialized in lameness, performance problems and surgery. He moved permanently to Wellington, Florida in 1992 where he established his practice and worked closely with the Palm Beach Equine Clinic.

Along with a busy office practice, Steve published in numerous industry journals and lectured at numerous events and conferences. He traveled extensively all over the world for his clients. He served as veterinarian for the U.S. Equestrian Team from 1978 on and was one of the five international veterinarians officiating at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. For over 35 years, he served as official veterinarian for over 100 horse shows, including the Washington International Horse Show, endurance rides, horse trials, competitive trail rides, hunt races and steeplechase races. Many friends and colleagues share that Steve’s kindness, respect and integrity toward both people and horses was beyond reproach.

Steve brought a unique and unwavering passion, vision and commitment to the sport horse industry. It was no surprise, then, when the Equestrian Federation chose him as the recipient of the 2009 Marty Simensen Award which recognizes individuals whose life work reflects the unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of horses over a period of many years and/or have saved equines through an act of courage and resolve during a crisis situation.

In addition to Steve’s expertise and dedication to his remarkable veterinary career, he was an all around devoted sports enthusiast relishing in skiing, hunting and honing considerable skill in windsurfing, scuba diving, sailing and sailboat racing. He was a navigator on the crew that won the Newport/ Bermuda race of 1984. He took great pleasure in introducing his nephews to the world of sailing on special visits with them.

After retiring his practice in 2013 and moving to the Florida Keys, he enjoyed fishing and scuba diving throughout the area. His circle of friends and colleagues was extensive and he, along with his beautiful wife, Jeanette, made their home a welcoming gathering and joyful partying place for over 27 years.

Steve is survived by his wife, Jeanette Soule; his sister, Barbara Soule Carlson and husband David; nephews, Matthew (Carrie), Daniel (Adele), and Peter (Grace) Carlson; three grand-nephews, Sean Turner Carlson, William Soule Carlson, and Kai Prentiss Carlson; and cousins Beth (Al) Baumert, Nancy Alexander and Jack (Lisa) Alexander and their families.

A celebration of life for Steve will be held at a later date.
