JOAN G. ALBERGA

April 28, 1935 – May 24, 2023

Courageous. Resilient. Survivor.

Joan Graham Alberga, born Joan Candasia Graham, age 88, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2023 in Covington, Georgia with her youngest daughter and grandsons by her side. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband Rupert, brother Keith, sister Carol and her beloved teacup poodle, Koda. She was a survivor who overcame remarkable odds throughout her lifetime having survived Polio as a teen requiring her to re-learn to talk, write, and walk, surviving a burst gall bladder, cancer, and two strokes. Through it all she kept pushing forward.

Joan came to the U.S. as an immigrant from Jamaica after marrying her second husband. She had 3 daughters and 13 years with Rupert prior to his passing. Along with her mother and her three young daughters, Joan moved to Miami, Florida to be closer to family and began working as a private caregiver during the day. She took classes in the evenings to learn about the United States and ultimately became a U.S citizen. After losing a client with whom she’d bonded closely, Joan shifted careers and went to work with her closest cousin, Tony, at his private medical practice. Losing her home after Hurricane Andrew prompted Joan to take early retirement and turn her focus to caring for her aging mother. Joan moved to Georgia in 2001 to live with her youngest daughter and her family.

Joan loved her family with her whole heart and always put their needs above her own. She made it a point to always know what was happening within the family and to keep everyone in the loop. She leaves behind her son Wayne East (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), daughters Gail (& Stu Oxman – Orlando, FL), Gina Brincko (Orlando, FL), Karen Alberga (Palm Acres, FL), and Julie (& Kevin Elion – Covington, GA), 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great-great granddaughters, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.

Isaiah 57: 1-2
